Meals On Wheels And Grief

Reunion Losses And Health Wake-Up

SPEAKER_02

Hey, welcome back to the fourth quarter podcast with your hosts, Doug and Ted. We've got an interesting week this episode, Ted, and I am kind of curious and excited. And I don't know where it's gonna go, Ted, but I know that we are gonna learn a lot because that's what this episode did. We are gonna do a little sneak peek and a little recap and revisit. Not too much, just little uh tidbits here and there on each, not each episode, but ones that we had guests on. Find out what we've learned, find out where it all started, what we've learned, and where we're going. But before we get into that, Ted, episode 11 last week with David Linnell from Meals on Wheels. Man, I love that man's story. And I love his passion and how he shows up and serves. Episode 11 is when passion fuels purpose, people become a priority. And that is just ingrained in every part of his story. So you're gonna get to hear a little bit about what Meals on Wheels does. It's far greater and much deeper than just delivering meals to people. They do all kinds of stuff. So you want to tune into that episode. And then what I love, personally loved, is his personal story, you know, his fitness, his health, and and how he goes about keeping himself in shape to be the director for that organization. And he is with Meals on Wheels Diablo region, so that's his area that he covers and does an amazing job. And they've got a lot of big things going on. But if you remember, Ted, off-air, he shared with us some very deep and heavy personal stuff that he had gone through and would love, by his suggestion, would love to come back on and do an episode on grieving and movement and how movement helps with grieving, because man, did he have to deal with some grieving for sure? So, if for no other reason go back to get to know the man David Linnell on episode 11, it's worth the listen. From there, Ted, let me just back up a little bit. Do you remember what sparked this whole podcast?

SPEAKER_00

I do, I do. I attended my 50 year class reunion in I think it was September, and one of the things that struck me was the in-memorium board that showed classmates that have passed since we graduated. That board just kept keeps growing and growing each year. And yeah, actually, believe it or not, it's you know, since then, six, seven months ago, I think we've had three other classmates pass away. Really? Yeah, last week. Really, really tough to see that. So that kind of prompted a conversation between the two of us and health and you know what we could do as we entered our fourth quarter or were in our fourth quarter to stay healthy and stay off the in-memorium board at the next reunion.

SPEAKER_02

As best we, you know, every I believe everyone has a number, and you your time comes when your time comes. But I think sometimes, or probably in today's, you know, we live in an obesogenic world today, you know, where most people are obese. It's like an epidemic out there. And that's why, you know, things like GLP1s and all these diet programs and exercise programs are coming out because there's a need for all that stuff. But let me ask you, Ted, on that board, do you have information that would suggest that some of those deaths, some of those people who've passed on, could have been due to just a lack of self-care, you know, taking care of themselves physically, nutritionally?

Living Fully With Cancer

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you know, and I don't know, it doesn't show that on there, but I'm sure that could have been the case with with some. Health wasn't a priority, right? You know, others were unavoidable things that you know, no matter what you do, you can't avoid. Right. Um, I guess the the point is if you can do everything you can to stay healthy. You know, we're blessed with our health in one way or another, and we have spoken with, and we're gonna go back and recap some of the episodes. We've we've spoken with just an example. Jonathan Pascual came on and episode four, which was titled, I don't fear death, I fear not living fully. Just an amazing story. I mean, he's he's had a four-year prognosis, very rare form of cancer, story of continuing his health and trying to stay as healthy as possible, and you know, even with death looming right over him and what he's done and how movement makes him feel better. And it's pretty amazing uh his his entire story. I mean, if you haven't heard the episode, go back and listen. It's it's pretty inspiring. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know what I love about what you just said is how movement makes him feel better. And I think you know, if you look up Jonathan Pasqual, he you'll see he's done some pretty massive accomplishments. He has some uh a lot of accolades. He did the the Kona Iron Man. I mean, that's a you know, that's no joke, Ted. That's you know, that's like the legit Iron Man you show up after being diag after being diagnosed. Yeah, he did, yeah, he did this while having cancer, while feeling pain, while being sick, but he knew that if he didn't do it then, you know, because he's he declines every year in his physical health, that you know, there may be a chance he wasn't going to be able to do it. And it was a big dream of his, and he got it done. And and in the first part, in the swim, and I believe he talks about it in that episode. In the swim, you know, he's feeling when because he says when his body's vertical like that, his you know, his his head swells up, everything, it's hard to breathe, and he just can't, it's hard. And you know, when you're swimming two miles out in the ocean, you know, you're vertical, and he was dealing with that, and he wasn't sure he was gonna be able be able to finish that first portion and go on to continue, but he does, he does, and so you got to get on the episode and listen to the rest of the story. But again, the reason I bring that up, Ted, is because if people listen to that, you're gonna hear Jonathan share with you that if you're somebody on the couch listening to that episode, you don't need to go out and do an Iron Man to live. You just need to get up and do one step, you know, and then the next day do two steps. And the next day do three steps, you know. He breaks it down that he and and today Jonathan's in a lot of pain, you know. If you follow him on Instagram or social media, you see there's days, man, he's he's struggling. He's on the struggle bus, and but he does what he can. If he can only ride his stationary bike for, you know, five minutes, then he's gonna do it for five minutes because he knows it brings a little bit of relief through the in the pain that he's going through.

SPEAKER_00

Right. And he's out there now, just uh speaking of inspiration, he's speaking to running groups, he has an event coming up in September that you'll talk a little bit more about, but he's promoting that and just getting people excited about it and continuing their running. And it it's just amazing that this person is has never slowed down in some ways, right? In in his attitude and his his positive mindset has just hasn't slowed. In fact, it's probably gotten stronger, even though his body has gotten weaker, right?

SPEAKER_02

Right, right. And and on that event, it's gonna, it's he's had this annual event called JP's Backyard Ultra. He encourages it if if you've never run or if you're a hiker, to just come out. You can walk the course. Um, look it up, you'll get all the details. I don't want to go into it here. It's all on the episode and and it's on the website when you sign up. You don't have to register, you can just go on there and look at the details. But this is going to be his last one. He has made that call that this is it's becoming a lot of work for him. And and last year he broke some record numbers as far as fundraising for the cause and all that stuff. So this will be uh at Saturday, September 26th, and starts at 8 a.m. And the location will be in Napa, in Napa, at 2201 Emola Avenue in Napa at Wilder Skyline Wilderness Park. So look up what a backyard ultra is. It's for absolute beginners, novices, intermediate, advanced. There'll be a lot of sponsorship out there. I am he has asked me to come out and MC part of the event. So I'm excited about going out there and supporting him and doing that. And it's just gonna be an awesome day. And I think Ted, you you are gonna try to, I know you have an event or something or commitment going on later that day, but I believe you you are even doing everything you can to be there for the first part of the day.

A Beginner-Friendly Ultra Invitation

SPEAKER_00

I am. I'm gonna do everything I can to get there. Awesome, awesome.

SPEAKER_02

All right, let's get back into how this fourth quarter podcast has been evolving for us.

SPEAKER_00

When we did this, we didn't know where it was going. I mean, it's just we've been reaching out, we've had people suggest guests to us. It's just been quite the journey, been a lot of fun. We had on uh the the next two episodes were actually Linda and Jerry Blight, who had written a book called Adult Fitness 40 to Forever. Very interesting story in that that they are a married couple, been married. I think they were just getting ready to celebrate their 55th anniversary or something. But they they had come to health in much different ways. Linda had been healthy her entire adult life, always working out, where Jerry had kind of gotten into the corporate world and let his health slip, if you will. Right. And to the point where I think he made a comment that doctors said, if this isn't taken care of, you won't feel the ground when you hit it because you'll be dead before you get there. Wow, I remember that the statement he made that woke him up and he's changed his life. And and I bring that story up because you know, we have people listening, some of them feel I haven't exercised in years, I can't do it, I don't want to do it, or you know, it's too late. And that isn't the case, it's just showing that it's never too late to get started.

SPEAKER_02

I think he doesn't Jerry even say like he went from 95% heart blockage or something like that. And and I think he even referred to himself as a reformed couch potato, right? Like that's exactly right. Yeah, and he's just you know, another wonderful example, and I think that which is a staple for you and I and a pillar or foundation for this podcast, is we just want to help people get started, you know. Those old stories, those old lies that say it's too late for me or it's too hard. It's not, you know, it's just you don't we're we are drowning in information and starving for wisdom. I said that in an episode before. There's so much stuff out there with people with these six-pack abs and hiking mountains and doing all these big events, and you're like, man, I can't ever do that. And no one's calling you to do that, man. We just want you to stand up off the couch. Let's start with that, right? Right.

Reinventing Health After 40

SPEAKER_00

Well, and and to that point, just to go into you know, some of our episodes, we have actually coached people online, yes, and which has been so great. That's been the most fun, I think, of the podcast is is having people come on here because they have actually changed the trajectory of their health. And to your point, one of them had not exercised in over 10 years. Yeah, Charles.

SPEAKER_01

Charles.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, literally barely got off the couch, and he's in his mid-60s, maybe a little bit older than that. He has in what's it been four weeks, five weeks since we had him on for the first time. He's riding an exercise bike every single day, 30 minutes plus. I mean, it's amazing. This is a person who two months ago couldn't walk, you know, was having trouble walking across the the house. Yeah. And he's out there doing it. And it was just a belief. He had a belief in himself and some encouragement from us and put him on a put him on a plan. And we've had three other people that we've had on there, and they've just all changed the trajectory of their their health in that time. And it's it's really exciting to to do that and to be involved with it.

SPEAKER_02

And Ted, on that note, I'm gonna I'm gonna just cut you off real quick because I think this is a great. I know you and I uh off air, we talked about, you know, what did we learn through all this? And and instead of asking you, what did you what are you learning in this moment, what are you most surprised about with these people we're coaching right now? What's one of the biggest surprises?

Live Coaching Wins And Momentum

SPEAKER_00

I think I think the biggest surprise is not only have they embraced it, but they are now that they are doing it on a regular basis and feeling better, that they are pushing themselves further physically. They're starting to look at nutrition, which we hadn't focused on. We just wanted them to create some healthy habits of movement. And now they're saying, Well, man, I'm feeling good. Some of them have lost some weight and are saying, What can I do to lose more? What you know, what can I do to help my nutrition? Some of them are cutting back on maybe some of their unhealthier habits, both nutritionally and alcohol consumption. They're looking at that. You know, that's that's what's been the most interesting to me, just just to see that. You know, I I read a quote at our age as we're getting older. I know you're still quite a bit younger than me, but uh, as you point out regularly, yes, sir. You know, uh I read something that said when when we understand that each day isn't one more day, but one less, we'll start giving more value to the things that really matter. Oh, that's good. Say that one more time, Ted. When we understand that each day isn't one more day, but one less, we'll start giving more value to the things that really matter. And whether that's our health, our family, whatever it may be, your priorities become more focused. That's kind of what we've looked at in in this podcast is just trying to get people up and moving and just as our tagline says, becoming the healthiest version of themselves, right? Uh, not competing with anyone else, not competing with the younger version of themselves, but becoming the healthiest version of themselves right now. That's what excites me. That's what's excited me about the four people. And to be honest, Doug, there's other people out there. I I've got a buddy of mine that we we talk regularly, a college buddy. He hasn't come on, he may at some point. We start talking. I was telling him what we're doing with some of the people we're coaching. He's gotten on board, he's he's on a program, we're working through that. He's had some some little ups and downs, but he's it's front of mind now. He's he's thinking about it, he's moving, and and that's exciting to see. Uh we have one of the people that we're coaching, Bill. He's gotten out and started hiking, but not only is he hiking, but he's connected with some people from his 50-year class reunion. He's creating a created a hiking group, and we're out there, you know, once or twice a week. I'm going out with them, and very exciting. And that's that's growing. I think we're up to about six people in that group now. So it's not just those that were coaching on air, but those that are listening and are are doing something about their health. Doesn't matter what it is, you know. I I hear people say, Oh, I just I can't go out. I don't like going out and doing this or doing that. But they they love dancing, they you know, do it, do it in your house, but structure it, you know. Say, you know what, I'm gonna I'm gonna dance here by myself in my house to these three songs, and that's gonna be 10 minutes of movement. You know, that's all it takes. It doesn't have to be some major program, but but structure it and do it regularly. Get in the habit of doing it. Yeah, every every morning I'm gonna get up and I'm gonna I'm gonna dance and I'm gonna start my day with some some healthy movement and some good spirit. You know, that's that's all it takes.

SPEAKER_02

I love that. Man, I wish these people could see your face right now, Ted, because you are you're in the zone, man. You're lit up. Your eyes are open, you're leaning in, and you're like, I want more, I want to coach more people, but that's uh that and that's you know, that's where this podcast, that's where it was born from. You saw something on those boards, those memorial boards, and you had something of value to offer so that you know we could do every whatever we can to avoid a premature death, you know, to keep ourselves physically and emotional. Because when you're physically healthy, you're gonna be mentally and emotionally healthier as well. It's just a natural occurrence, it's just what happens organically. You don't have to try, it just happens.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I think uh one of the things there was a quote that was mentioned here somewhere, but it was something like it's not how long you live, but how you live.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I like that.

SPEAKER_00

Something along those lines, and it's very true. I mean, are are we just existing? Are we still just breathing or or are we living?

Consistency Rules And Excuses

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's about the quality of life, it ain't about the quantity, absolutely, yeah. Because if I can't, yeah, if I can't wipe my own behind, Ted, I don't that's not quality for me, man. I just send just send me out and shoot me, man. And yes, I'm gonna keep that on air, Ted. I'm not gonna edit that out. That's the truth, baby. Come on, okay. You know what I'm saying? Not surprised, but I'm pleasantly enjoying watching is it doesn't take a lot of movement for people to become self-motivated. That it, you know, we gave all these people that we're coaching now small goals, little things that were very manageable, that fit within their day-to-day life. It wasn't something that we're gonna have to add extra for the most part. They were already doing this stuff, and you know, one of the things that you and I recognize is yeah, you can do it once, you can do it twice, you can do it for seven days, but can you do it every day? Right. And that's the thing that we wanted the people we're coaching to awaken to because when fires come or problems happen, or somebody's sick, or whatever, man, the excuses come running in, and we and we find out just how easily we let everyday, you know, normal excuses become excuses. You know, everyday situations become excuses, and then we give up on our goals, we forget about the commitment we said we were gonna do when we were all fired up, and all of a sudden we find find ourselves in a place where, man, I just broke a promise to myself. And it doesn't feel good. It doesn't feel good. Back of mind, it's like we know it's there. We're like, ah, well, I'll miss today. And if you miss you know what, if you miss a day, it's not a big deal, man. It's all good, but don't miss two. Because if you miss two days, that's a habit now.

SPEAKER_00

That's a habit we've we've talked about it. I in fact, I think one of the episodes was titled this. It was your excuses and your successes can't live in the same house. Yes, yeah. What episode is that, Ted?

SPEAKER_02

Because people need to go back and listen to that one.

SPEAKER_00

Uh that was one of the first ones, right? Episode six, I think, with Doug and Charles or Charles and yeah, actually, that's uh half of that.

SPEAKER_02

That's episode three, episode three. Episode three, right. Yeah, okay. Hey, real quick, I want to go back to Bones real quick. You know, I remember the first thing he said when we got him on for the very first time, and he's one of the people we're coaching as well. Oh, and he's just knocking it out of the park, man. So proud of that guy. I'm proud of all of him. But what really inspires me and impresses me about Bones is he on air, he said, Oh, I didn't know. I thought I was signed up for something else. He didn't realize he was coming on to be live coached and all this other stuff. And and look at him now, man. That boy is just crushing. And like you said, he's got he's got his own little hiking group going, and he's doing battle ropes and hiking and you know, playing and push-ups, and he's a beast. He's a beast. So, and we gave him very little to start with, and he's added on other stuff on his own.

SPEAKER_00

It is amazing. And you know, they all four of the people and some others that we've spoken to, and other guests that have come on are going to come out in July and be part of my birthday challenge, right? And you know, I can tell you, Mitch last year came out, it was a struggle. And man, whoo, yeah. He was he was suffering out there, he was doing it, he was getting around the park a little bit, but it was tough. Man, he's just doing that regularly now. He's not doing that on a daily basis. He's out walking at a park where up where he lives, and you know, doing it, he's lost weight, he's feeling better, he's just excited about it. And like you said, all four of them have just really embraced the process. It's very exciting, right?

SPEAKER_02

And you speaking of those, you know, Mitch, just a big big shout out to Mitch because in the very beginning, Mitch was pumped up. You know how Mitch is. He he's he's all in, man. He gets excited and he's like, Oh, I'm doing it, I'm doing it. And and the poor guy, man, he got hit with the the flu or something. I it might have even been COVID, I don't know, but he was down for the count, and he was beating himself up, and he I can't couldn't get his steps in. He was getting his water in. And then you and I circled back with him, came back and helped him just kind of get mentally wrap his mind around hey, look, this is a season, this is what it is about being healthy, and and this is how you can still move forward. And I gotta tell you, Ted, Mitch is like he's like one of the coaches in the text threads we have. He's always sending out music and to inspire people, he's always sending an encouraging word, and he'll find a meme with some encouragement on it. And I mean, that guy is just once he got through that sickness and he felt like he's was still worth being supported from his own perspective and from us, you know, he just he was all in and he has really elevated his game, and we have seen substantial growth from him. And same thing with Karen, you know, Karen was, you know, she wants consistency. She struggled with the just the the massive consistency of every day, every day, every day. And she's very capable, as we all know, to knock out some big and extreme goals, you know. And we had to, you know, just chatting with her and reminding her that, hey, this is this is an everyday thing. So we gotta we gotta bring your goals back down. And and it was fun and interesting to listen to her struggle with her taking us, giving her smaller goals. Like she wanted the big, massive goals. It's like, no, no, no, this, this, this is how you play the long game, man. You gotta shoot, shoot small, and you're gonna get there. You're you're gonna doesn't mean you can't go walk 20,000 steps in a day, but your commitment is to you know, 6,000 steps, and let's just keep you there.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and what was what was interesting is when we had each of the people on, they really opened up as to why they wanted to get healthier. And I believe Karen, she's had two or three siblings that have passed away. Yes, they were all younger than she is now. She got real emotional about it, and you know, it's I think that's why she was committed, and that's what will we try and do is just kind of dig down. And you know, everybody could say, I just want to lose a few pounds, I want to feel better. But why? What is the real reason behind why you're on this journey? Yeah, that's what we try and dig, dig a little deeper into to get there.

Next Guest Medicare Plus Coaching

SPEAKER_02

I love that. That's enough on on the people we're coaching right now, but I I would encourage people if they want to hear real life human beings going through this process, struggling with their why, and and you know, go to episode three, listen to that, and episode four. I think that was the next coaching duo. Actually, not episode four, three, episode three, episode six, episode six, and then uh when did we have them all together? Was that episode episode nine? Episode nine back. Yeah, and uh man, go listen to those episodes and just listen to the the self-improvement, the joy, and how things just are transforming from them. Ted and I have very little to do other than getting them started, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Other than just getting them started. It's interesting because we actually have a guest on next week, Tracy Brown, who I went to college with. And I had spoken with her because she is a co-owner of a company called MedWice and insurance company. And what they do is they they set people up with Medicare when they're turning 65 and go through the process with them, but they also help them manage beyond that and you know, help navigate through Medicare and things that are available to them. And we thought our audience, the fourth quarter, that that would be interesting. So I called her and I called her last week. She didn't get into any of the insurance stuff. First thing she said was, I've got wedding coming up in November, and you know, I'm I'm out of shape, I don't want to do this. And she's just going on and on about you know some of her health struggles. It's not like she's obese or anything, she's just you wants to be healthier. As we're talking, I finally just said, Hey, would you be up to being coached? She thought about it for a little bit, but she said, Yeah. So it's kind of fun because that's gonna be next week and it's gonna be kind of uh I guess you'd call it a hybrid episode. Yeah, in that she'll be on, she'll talk about Medicare things pertaining to that. But then we're also going to start coaching her as well, and that's always exciting when when we can do that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'm looking forward to that for sure. Because as I start approaching, you know, I'm I'll be 60 this year and uh 65, that's when you start getting all that stuff, Ted. I don't know. I'm not I'm not that 65 is what I care, yeah. So, but I want to know like what what does that mean to me? And that so she's gonna answer. I'm gonna ask from uh from a very curious posture, just like what does that mean? What should I prepare for as I'm 60? And you know, how does that open doors for me and et cetera? And then she's also gonna answer some things for people who are already part of Medicare. And I I know like my dad, I live next to my dad, he's 84, and there's a lot of benefits and things that he's not aware of, you know, just because there's a lot of fine print and this and that. So I think she's gonna share some of the things that people may not be aware of, right? So that it'll be interesting to just just to get that that full version from her on the whole the medical part of it, but also it's gonna be real fun opening up her mind and her heart to see what where she's struggling and why she's struggling and and what she's willing to do about it, you know, because we got to find that out too.

SPEAKER_00

And she's another one that she's open to it, she's willing to do it. I think we're gonna have to rein her in a little bit. She's she's fired up. Oh, good.

Betty At 82 And Daily Movement

SPEAKER_02

I'm fired up too. Tell her to bring it, tell her to bring it. Yeah, I was gonna say, do you remember early on? Because I want to get back to the episodes, because you and I will go on all day with all these other episodes, but early on, I think I forget what episode it was, maybe episode seven with Betty. I mean, because that was I know you had your spark for wanting to do this podcast, and then you reached out to me and said, Hey, would you be open to doing a podcast? And I'm like, Yeah, let's do it. And you told me kind of what it was about and what was driving it, and what you explained here earlier. So I'm not gonna repeat that. But but then we met Betty, and I know for me that that just took it to another. I'm like, oh my gosh, this is proof that if you just get started and you stay consistent, tell us about Betty, Ted.

SPEAKER_00

Betty's the standard bearer of this podcast. I mean, she's what we strive to be in our fourth quarter. She's man, she's tiring, tiring to listen to. And when she gives us her schedule, I mean, I think she's hiking two days a week, yoga or Pilates, I think it's yoga three days a week. She's in the gym lifting weights, she's traveling, traveling the world, actually. She's going on a long trip to Greece, she's gonna be there for almost a month, and they're gonna do some hiking there, and she's gonna run some of the youngsters into the ground trying to keep up with her.

SPEAKER_02

And she's not even gonna do that intentionally. We just know because of who she is, that's just gonna happen, and people are gonna look at her and say, Man, and speaking of Ted, I don't think people understand why they should be impressed while we're saying this because we didn't mention to them how old Betty is. Oh, right, Betty's 82, 82 years old, and she does laps around us, man.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, and she is the biggest thing from her episode that is has become my mantra and going into my birthday challenge is as she got older, you don't do less, you do more. Yes, and so you know that kind of sparked the birthday challenge this year. Is I'm gonna do the same things as last year, the same types of things, but it's gonna be more steps, more miles, more push-ups, raise more money, have more people come join us. That's that's the one thing that I took away from that episode, amongst many, many things with the wisdom that she shared with us, you know, and also just mentioning uh daily chores, parking further away from the grocery store, yeah, or not getting a washing machine that is easier to get the clothes into. She wants to be able to squat down, do squats while you're putting it in the just amazing. But turning everyday chores, tasks into some sort of exercise. They all serve a purpose, they all serve a purpose, and it's interesting to that point. I just saw today on social media Ann Affinito, who was episode eight, who's uh a certified personal trainer, was it was she does little videos every day on social media, and one of them was actually exactly that she was talking about, you know, when you're you're carrying your grocery bags in, do curls with them as you're carrying them. Oh wow, yeah, as you're I can't remember if something's in the microwave, do some push-ups against the wall while you're waiting for the microwave to be ready or something. And it's funny, is she's 30 years younger than Betty, but the same mindset, just those take take those everyday tasks and move, just turn them into movement and exercise. Exactly.

SPEAKER_02

If you're just if you're in the kitchen waiting for something, do some air squats, you know. Do you can turn those moments of pause into purpose? Oh, I like that. I just made that up. And it's by the way, but but by the way, Ted, not to cut you off, but Betty is episode seven, redefining aging from fear to forever young. For we encourage you to go and listen to that, man. There's gonna be so many nuggets you're gonna take away from that episode. Because go ahead, Ted. What were you gonna say?

SPEAKER_00

Well, no, what's what's funny? I was just saying is how some of our guests have just kind of merged together that Anne, I believe the episode was called Strength Has No Expiration Date. And she followed Betty up, and that's exactly what Betty's living right now. I mean, she's she's strong mentally, physically. You know, the message is coming across. And and one of the things about the podcast that we thought was, hey, you're not you're not gonna listen to this and listen to every word that's being said and you know, get something out of everything that's being said. But we hope that by having these guests on that you'll be able to pick up little bits and pieces from the episodes that you'll be able to apply. I know that we had Patty Moon on on episode 10, who is a nutritionist, and I picked up things with her and just the whole, you know, the needing more protein as we get older. And right, I've made changes to some of the things that I'm doing nutritionally just because of that. And she just had so much wisdom. I know that when Ann was on, Ann focused on movement and touched a little bit on nutrition, where Patty focused on nutrition and touched a little on on movement. So they kind of mesh together very well. You know, if you go and and listen to these episodes, if you haven't listened before, we encourage you to go on and you know just pick up little bits and bits and pieces from that.

Everyday Tasks As Exercise

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And I'm not gonna go into total depth, but I was very it was very interesting when Ann Afinito on episode eight, Strength Has No Expiration Date, talked about one of the biggest muscles and most important muscles you can train were your glutes and how they were attached to everything. The way she broke that down and unpacked that was really, really cool. I if for nothing, no other reason, go back and listen to that. It's important, especially as we get older. These are key muscles and areas that you know. Hey, don't get me wrong, you you get the benefit of you know having a nice backside too, but there's so much more tagged onto that as well.

SPEAKER_00

So go back and listen to episode eight with Anne Aph and Yeah, I think I think she mentioned that in response to one of our listeners' questions who was having some problems with their knees. Right. And she was saying strengthening your glutes and your quads, everything around your knees will support that and help out with those aches and pains that you have, you know, as we get a little bit older.

SPEAKER_02

Right. I did a deep I off-air, I did a deep dive on the glutes and and what they do. And and man, I'm learning tons. I'm like, oh my gosh. You know, and I train my glutes anyways, but I didn't when you know why you're training them, it's just a whole different level. Like all of a sudden you have more enjoyment. To your point, Ted, you say a lot of times on several episodes, if if you want this to last, have fun doing it. If you don't like going to the gym, don't go to the gym. Some people have fun going to the gym and they go all the time. Maybe, but maybe you have more fun going for walks, being outside in nature. Then do that. You know, find something that you're going to enjoy if you want it to be something that's going to last, especially while you're in your fourth quarter. I understand people that are in their 20s and 30s and even mid-40s, you know, they're in a lot of them are into the no pain, no gains, that old 80s mentality. And they can, you know, they're they get off on pushing the limits and and to tiptoeing that line of injury and and or breakthrough. And and that's okay. Your body can handle that stuff at that point. And you know, you recover, you recover quickly. But I know now, as I repo approach 60 years old, just because I can do an exercise or do something with my mobility doesn't mean I should, because I don't recover like I used to. And that's such a key component to longevity. Just be hey, if I can squat 500 pounds, don't mean I should do it because if I don't recover well, I'm risking injury and also risking the time it's going to take me to get back out there and do the and be consistent with my mobility.

SPEAKER_00

If you recall last week, uh David mentioned that he discovered CrossFit, I think in his 40s, maybe it was during COVID. So actually it was in his mid-50s. And I think he made the comment that it saved us, saved his life. Right. Finding that, and that's that's what it is. That to what you were just saying is finding that thing that you love. You know, it doesn't matter what it is, it's something that you want to do and go do on a regular basis. He's actually even become an instructor for CrossFit, right? So, you know, it doesn't matter what it is, if it's walking, hiking, biking, going to the gym, not going to the gym, crossfit, whatever. You gotta enjoy it, you gotta have fun and and get out there and do it, or you just won't. Right. And you know, that's all part of consistency, right?

SPEAKER_02

Even if it's doing, even if it's finding purpose in those pauses. Like if you did nothing, if you didn't go outside, if you didn't go to the gym, if you didn't ride a bike, but you were intentional about while I'm waiting at the microwave, I'm gonna do air squats, and while I'm watching TV, I'm gonna just sit and stand, as Betty said, right? Um, just sit and stand, you know, during every when a commercial comes on, don't just sit there, stand up, sit back down, stand up, wait till the commercials are finished. And man, if you watch TV nowadays, you know them commercials be lasting three minutes, so you're gonna get you're gonna get a workout in, man. But yeah, even if you just turn your pauses into purpose, you're good, you're gonna be way better off than doing nothing. And and make it enjoyable, you know, have fun, make it a game, turn it, make it, you know, turn it into a game and all those pauses. It's it's make it fun.

Fun Fitness And Smart Aging

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. And to your point, going back to you know, recap the whole podcast is one of the things we said is we got we've got to have fun doing this. Yes, and you know, a buddy of mine said uh I was complaining. I said, Oh, I would like to have more more listeners just because I we think we're getting a we're putting out some good content, we've got a good message, and we hope more people listen. And and we do. He said, Are you having fun doing it? Isn't that the reason you did this? Was you know to enjoy it? And I said, Yeah. So he had to kind of bring me back down and ground me a little bit as to why why we're doing this, and hopefully our listeners are having fun listening to it and are getting things out of it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's definitely been it's we're learning. I love that you and I are, you know, we got on here to help people out, to give them access to things so they can learn and be inspired to move. And man, Ted, I got, you know, every time I get involved in something like this, I always come back full circle and say, Man, I think I'm getting more out of this than the people we're trying to help. Right. And it's just uh I think that's just the way life works. You know, when you get into service for something that's good, that has meaning and purpose behind it, you always at the end of the day find yourself going, man, I think I got more out of it. And that that's not our intention, but it's just the way it's working out. And I look forward to what's coming ahead because you know, Ted, we got maybe a few weeks ahead planned out. We've got people we're coaching, and we want to invite, we want to take this moment to invite others to to get on board and reach out to be willing to be coached. If you're scared, frightened, being on air, whatever. We can we'll talk to you off air. There's something about being on air that hope helps you be more accountable to yourself because you get to hear yourself, uh-huh, and you don't have to do it alone. Bring some friends on with you, too. It's right, it's a fun, fun journey.

Faith In The First Step

SPEAKER_00

That that kind of leads to my song and just how we wrap up this episode. Perfect. Uh is that we we had one of our listeners suggest possibly getting into doing an episode on on faith and religion and how that impacts us as we we get older. And we're we're toying with that idea. I mean, we we try and keep this you know, not political, not religious. Everybody's got their beliefs. But I thought about it and I thought without getting into just specific religions, just about faith. And one of the things that one of the quotes I've always loved, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had one, and this is kind of in regards to faith in us, I guess, and getting people to possibly come on and be coached. But it's take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step. Oh, I like that. That's a good thing. And you know, whether it's faith in a higher power, faith in the process of getting healthy, or just faith in yourself, you just need to get up every morning and say yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Woke up this morning with a child in my scroll. Start still rising, but my heart's on a roll. Trouble try to knock me off my lane, but Chris showed up and broke them strain. I still believe. Got to work that thing for me. Joy in my scrap peace in my mind. I got the faith, and I'm doing just fine.

SPEAKER_03

I got it, though.

SPEAKER_04

I got faith. Oh my god. I got faith. I got faith.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I got faith, Ted. Come on, man. Ted, you're messing with my emotions right there, Ted. You know how I am. That's good. I love that. That's you know, I love the way you set that song up too, because it's we're not getting on here to tell people what to believe, who to believe, and what faith journey to walk or anything like that. That's that's a personal choice and a personal opinion. But having faith in this process, because if you just take the step, man, Ted and I have walked the walk we fall all the time. It's nice to have each other to help each other get back up. So we know the power of community, we know the power of process. It's just it's a beautiful thing, and we are passionate about sharing that with others. You know, your journey, we're not gonna give you some grandiose system to like get you all pumped up. We're gonna keep it real, we're gonna keep it simple, we're gonna keep it small. So just have a little faith and show up. Have a little faith and show up, and I I believe you will be very pleasantly surprised.

Invitation To Be Coached And Closing

SPEAKER_00

I I think faith in the process is is a big one though. You know, I first heard that quote, and I I remember using it when I was coaching soccer, you know, trying to get the girls to know that there was a process in place we'd get to where we wanted to go, but they had to have faith in what we were doing and and belief, you know, same same thing. So yeah, that one that one means a lot to me. It brings me back to those days of yeah coaching my daughter's teams and you know, just having them believe in what we were doing. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And we're inviting anyone listening that if you know someone you can share this with to help them get into the process, or if yourself is desiring to get in the process. Now, if you're listening to this episode and there's a little flutter going on in your heart, a little nervousness in your stomach, a little tension, that's because you're supposed to reach out. Go ahead and follow that cue. That's a prompting, man. You just reach on out. Reach out. We will meet you with great love and respect and honor and dignity. We will protect your privacy, whatever you want. We just want to help you get started. So, with that said, Ted, I'm just gonna go ahead and wrap it up like I do, because you know I do what I do, and say God bless and peace out. If you like what you heard, be sure to subscribe, follow, share an episode. If you want to leave a comment, go to the show notes. There's a text link there.
